What is a compressed sofa? Unboxing and expansion explained

A compressed sofa – sometimes called a “sofa in a box” – arrives vacuum-packed and much smaller than it will be in your lounge. Unwrap it, wait a few hours, and the foam springs back to full size. It sounds like a gimmick, but for apartments, narrow hallways and anyone carrying a sofa up stairs, it solves real problems. Here is how it works, what to expect on delivery day, and what to check before you buy.

What “compressed” actually means

Foam is mostly air. A compressed sofa is made from foam blocks (rather than a timber frame with springs) that are squeezed in a press, wrapped airtight and boxed. Because the air is squeezed out, the package is a fraction of the sofa’s finished size. When you open the wrapping, air flows back into the foam’s cells and it recovers its shape.

This only works with sofas that have no rigid frame and no folding mechanism. The Nova range is a good example: each piece is made from high-resilience cold-cure foam (27 kg/m³ and 25 kg/m³) in zip-off corduroy covers, with polished iron bars underneath – nothing that needs to fold, lock or unfold.

Why it matters for real homes

  • Stairs, lifts and narrow hallways. A framed three-seater can be impossible to turn through a terrace hallway or into a small lift. Compressed packages are smaller and have no rigid corners.
  • Weight you can manage. No timber frame and no steel mechanism means much less weight. A 2m Nova Sofa Bed is about 40 kg in total – two people can carry it comfortably.
  • Moving house later. No mechanism means nothing to rattle loose in a removalist truck, and modules can be carried one at a time.
  • Delivery. Smaller, lighter packages are simply easier to get from the kerb to your front door.

Delivery day: unboxing step by step

  1. Carry the boxes to the room first. Delivery is to your ground-floor front door. Once the foam starts expanding it is much bigger and harder to move, so open everything where the sofa will live.
  2. Clear the floor. Give yourself enough space for the sofa at full size plus room to move around it.
  3. Open the box, not the plastic. Lift the wrapped foam out of the box before you cut the plastic.
  4. Cut the wrapping carefully. Use scissors or a safety cutter, cut away from the cover and never stab into the package – the cover is right underneath.
  5. Let the air in. Remove all the wrapping and stand each block the right way up. You will see it start to grow within minutes.
  6. Wait 6–10 hours. That is how long compressed foam takes to fully expand. Wait for the full time before using it as a bed.
  7. Ventilate. Open a window if the weather allows – new foam and fabric have a “new” smell for the first day or so, like most new furniture.
  8. Check everything. If anything has arrived damaged, take photos and an unboxing video and contact us within 30 days of delivery – the details are in our returns policy.

Helping the foam recover

  • Warmth helps. Foam expands faster in a warm room. In a cold Melbourne or Canberra winter, run the heater for a while (keeping the sofa a sensible distance away).
  • Turn blocks over once or twice during the first few hours so air reaches every side.
  • Smooth the covers. As the foam fills out, run your hands along the seams and corners so the cover sits straight.
  • Do not stack the blocks while they are recovering – give each one its own space.

Common questions people worry about

Will it be as comfortable as a “normal” sofa?

Comfort depends on the foam, not on how it was shipped. High-resilience foam is designed to recover from compression – it is the same property that lets it spring back after you stand up. Density is the number to look at: the Nova range uses 27 kg/m³ and 25 kg/m³ foam, firm enough to sit up on and soft enough to nap on.

Does compression damage the foam?

Good-quality high-resilience foam is made to be compressed and recover. What matters is giving it the full expansion time and not leaving it sealed in its wrapping for months after delivery.

Is a compressed sofa a sofa bed?

Not always, but many are. With no mechanism inside, a foam sofa becomes a bed by moving cushions rather than unfolding a frame. On the Nova Sofa Bed you lift the back cushions down and lay them flat; the 2 × 2m L corner makes a bed of about 200 × 200 cm.

Neither is “better” for everyone. If you have easy access and want to sit on your sofa the moment it arrives, a framed sofa is fine. If stairs, lifts or narrow hallways are part of your life – or you move house often – compressed foam takes most of the stress out of delivery.

Looking after a foam sofa

  • Plump and rotate cushions every week or two so they wear evenly.
  • Vacuum the covers weekly and blot spills straight away.
  • Wash zip-off covers following the care label – see our guide to washing removable covers.
  • Never put the foam in a washing machine or dryer.

Before you buy: a quick checklist

  • Is it all foam, or is there a frame or mechanism? (Only all-foam pieces compress.)
  • What density is the foam?
  • Are the covers zip-off and washable?
  • How long does the foam take to expand, and is that time on the product page?
  • What is the warranty? Every Nova piece has a 3-year warranty.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a compressed sofa take to expand?

Allow 6–10 hours after unpacking for the foam to fully expand. Wait for the full time before using it as a bed.

Where should I open a compressed sofa?

Carry the boxes into the room where the sofa will go before opening them. Once the foam starts to expand it is much larger and harder to move through doorways.

Is a compressed sofa easier to get into an apartment?

Usually, yes. Compressed packages are smaller and lighter than a framed sofa and have no rigid corners, which makes lifts, stairs and narrow hallways easier. Still measure doorways and lifts before ordering.

How heavy is a foam sofa bed?

Much lighter than a framed sofa bed. A 2m Nova Sofa Bed weighs about 40 kg, so two people can carry it.

Can I wash the foam if something spills on it?

No – never put foam in a washing machine or dryer. Unzip the cover, press out as much liquid as you can with a dry towel and let the foam air-dry completely before refitting the cover.
