Choosing a corduroy sofa colour: 17 shades and how to pick
Updated
Corduroy changes with the light. The raised ribs catch light on one side and shadow on the other, so the same sofa can look two shades different at 9 am and 9 pm. That is what makes it beautiful – and why choosing a colour from a phone screen is risky. This guide groups our 17 corduroy colours by mood, explains what each one is like to live with, and shows you how to choose with confidence.
Start with how you live, not with a colour chart
- Kids, pets, food on the sofa? Mid and dark tones – Sand, Fog, Chestnut, Coffee, Thyme, Coal – hide everyday marks best. Very light and very dark colours both show lint and pet hair more.
- Small or dark room? Light neutrals and soft colours (Cream, Sand, Sky, Pink) make the sofa feel lighter.
- Big room or plain walls? This is where a statement colour works – Rust, Orange, Ocean or Forest give the room a focal point.
- Moving in the next few years? Choose a colour that works in many rooms: Fog, Sand, Thyme or Coal.
Remember that every Nova piece has zip-off covers, and replacement covers come in all 17 colours. If you change your mind in a few years, you can change the colour without replacing the sofa – see our guide to removable sofa covers.

How light changes corduroy
Corduroy’s ribs (the “wale”) reflect light differently depending on which way you look at them. In practice:
- North-facing rooms get the most sun in Australia; colours look warmer and brighter, and strong sun can fade fabric over time.
- South-facing rooms get softer, cooler light; greys and blues can look a shade cooler than on screen.
- Warm evening lamps make Sand, Amber and Yellow look golden, and make Ocean and Coal look deeper.
- Screens vary – every phone and monitor shows colour differently.
Order a swatch – the only reliable test
A fabric swatch is the cheapest way to avoid a colour you do not love. It is sent from our Melbourne warehouse and usually arrives within 3–8 business days. When it arrives:
- Put it on the floor or seat where the sofa will go – not on a white table.
- Look at it in the morning, at midday and at night with your usual lamps on.
- Hold it next to the floor, the curtains and any rug you are keeping.
- Rub your hand across the ribs both ways to see how much the shade shifts.
Colour ideas by room
Main living room
The lounge sofa gets the most use, so practical colours win: Sand, Fog, Thyme, Chestnut or Coal. If the rest of the room is neutral, a deep colour like Ocean or Rust makes the sofa the centrepiece without looking loud.
Study or spare room with a sofa bed
Guests sleep on it, so a calm colour works best: Thyme, Sky, Sand or Fog. A softer colour also makes a small room feel more restful at night.
Kids’ room or rumpus room
Mid tones that hide marks – Chestnut, Coffee, Thyme, Coal – plus the reassurance that the covers zip off for washing. Brighter accents (Yellow, Orange, Pink) are fun on a chair rather than the main sofa.
Apartment with an open-plan living area
Pick up a colour already in the space – timber floors suit Chestnut and Amber; grey concrete or tiles suit Fog, Coal and Ocean; lots of indoor plants make Rust, Pink and Thyme glow.
Rentals
If you move every year or two, choose a colour that will work in many rooms: Sand, Fog, Thyme or Coal. You can always buy a second set of covers later.
Pairing colours across a room
- Matching set: because every Nova piece uses the same corduroy, a Nova chair in the same colour as the sofa matches exactly.
- Tone on tone: Thyme with Forest, Sand with Fog, Chestnut with Coffee – calm and layered.
- Complementary: Rust or Orange with Thyme; Pink with Forest; Ocean with Amber.
- Neutral sofa, colourful cushions: the easiest way to change the look each season.
