Corner sofa beds: sizes, left vs right, and how to measure your room

Corner sofas seat more people along the same walls and give everyone room to put their feet up. Here is how to pick the right size and the right way round – and what to check if you also want it to work as a guest bed.

Left-hand or right-hand: how to tell

Stand in front of the sofa, facing it, as if you were about to sit down. The side the long (or open) end is on is the “hand”. If the long end is on your right, it is a right-hand corner; on your left, a left-hand corner.

To choose, look at your room: put the long end where it will not block a doorway or walkway, and where people will want to stretch out (often facing the TV or a window).

Open or closed corner?

  • Open corner – one end has no arm, so you can lie along it or get in and out easily. Feels more relaxed and less bulky. Example: Nova L Corner – Open.
  • Closed corner – arms on both ends, so it feels enclosed and snug. Good for a corner of the room against two walls. Example: Nova L Corner – Closed.

Common corner sofa sizes

Layout Footprint (W × D) Good for
Compact corner (Nova Flex) 200 × 200 cm Apartments, studies, small lounges
L corner, 2 × 1.5m modules 250 × 150 cm Medium lounge rooms
L corner, 2 × 2m modules 300 × 200 cm Family rooms; makes a bed of about 200 × 200 cm

All Nova corners are 76 cm high. For other models and how to measure, see the size guide.

How to measure for a corner sofa

  1. Measure both walls from the corner outwards.
  2. Leave at least 40–60 cm between the sofa and a coffee table, and keep walkways clear.
  3. Tape the L shape on the floor and check doors, windows, heaters and power points.
  4. Measure doorways and stairs. Foam corner sofas arrive as separate modules, compressed in boxes, so they are much easier to get inside than a one-piece framed sofa.

If the corner also needs to be a guest bed, check the size of the sleeping area and how it is made. On the Nova corners there is no fold-out frame: you lay the back cushions flat across the seats. With 2 × 2m modules that gives a sleeping area of about 200 × 200 cm.
